0x00000024 BSOD

I am fixing a PC for a mate of mine; her system has two hard disks installed, one for backup (seems strange, she could have partitioned one!)

She rang me up with a BSOD with a STOP code of 0x00000024.  Booting with the Dell XP CD, all I get is the same BSOD, after the initial setup services load.  So I can't run chkdsk /r.

I have run a full Dell Diagnostic - no hard disk errors reported on either of the drives, memory test went fine, all other tests were fine.

I booted it with Ubuntu Linux, and it found one bad sector on the second drive.  Also, there have been no minidumps recorded!  I also tried downloading the latest Dell Storage Drivers, these didn't work.

The desktop is a Dimension e520.

I am starting to think it is more of a Windows problem than a hardware problem!

It does the same when booting from the other disk as well.

Hi Tommy2k8,

Just to rule out the second hard drive as the problem, try this. Turn off the system, disconnect the second drive, boot to the BIOS and make sure the SATA port is disabled for the second drive. Then see if you can boot the system.

No, it doesn't work.  Is there a chance it could be a virus?

No, there's a very good chance this is a problem with the hard drive.

Then you have a damaged file system and will need to reinstall Windows. During the installation process, if you delete the current partition and create a new one, that will resolve the problem.
