A disk read error occurred....

I have an Inspiron 6000 running XP and I received this error " A disk read error occurred press ctrl+alt+del to restart" when I tried to start my computer. I ran the diagnostics program and did not receive any errors. I also ran the chkdsk function in the XP recovery console and I received the message "the volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems." Is it a hardware problem or an OS problem? I checked out the windows site and it said to reinstall windows. But if it isn't a OS problem than reinstalling windows won't fix anything.

Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this?

Hi, Raven:

My suggestion would be to run another diagnostic program, such as one provided by the hard drive manufacturer. Most of these can be run from the CD drive or a flash drive. That will separate the software issues from the hardware issues.

How can I recover data from the disk drive that seems to have gone bad, making knocking noises.

I have the same problem this morning. The disk drive is making a knocking noise as it tries to start Windows, and the system tries to reboot showing DELL post screen. When diagnostics is run, it'd give 1000-0146 and chkdsk /r gives "the volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems" after ckecking 5%... Is there any way to recover the data on the failed drive? Unfortunately, my latest backup is 4 months old, and it would be a disaster to be unable to recover the data. THANKS in advance.
