Hi, dneely:
I'm preferential toward Pioneer (listed in my signature), but NEC, Sony, Plextor and others are also good. I'd avoid the cheap store brands (I/O Magic, for example). Try Newegg for good prices and selection.

Correct. All DVD burners will write and play all types of CD and DVD media.
I would make sure your system meets the minimum system requirements for any video editing software you buy.
