Adding a new hdd partition

I just cloned the OEM 40gb hdd in my Inspiron 600m onto an 80gb hdd.  The OEM partitions cloned fine with the final results appearing in WinXP Pro's Disk Management console as follows:
On the far left, a 94mb FAT partition (EISA Configuration), in the middle a 67gb NTFS partition (C)(System), and on the far right, a 7.42gb FAT32 partition (Unknown Partition).

I would like to add an extended partition for a FAT32 D: drive to store my data.

I have Partition Magic (ver. 8).  If I shrink the C: partition to 30gb, it will leave 47gb unallocated space, which I can use to create the D: partition.  Does the placement of a D: partition in between the C: partition and the Unknown Partition cause a problem if I need to restore the drive if I later have a system failure?  Thanks in advance.

Any kind of partitioning of the hard drive damages the restore partition. I know from experience. If I knew what I know now, I wouldn't have done it. I would have bought second drive instead.

I did just what you wanted to do. I decreased the size of my C: drive, without touching the restore partition, but just the same it no longer works.

I agree. It's better to keep the partitions untouched. External storage is cheap these days and that will also protect your data in case of hard drive crash.
