adding external hard drive

Can you add an external hard drive like MyBook to a laptop?  If so how do you do it?

In general yes - they plug into the USB or firewire port on the notebook.

I am looking at the Western Digital MY BOOK to add to my Inspiron 9400.  Is there any special thing that I need to pay strict attention to in adding this one to this particular laptop?

The drive will work just fine.
