Adding Second Hard Drive
I have a 1yr old Dimension 4550.
Windows XP
I purchased, from Dell, a 120GB
hard drive (Hitachi) that I was told
by sales works with my PC.
The new drive did not come with any
documentation. I have several questions
regarding installation, but in summary,
what are the required steps?
(Is there a web link for how to do it?)
Questions:
- What, if anything, do I have to do
at the BIOS level?
- What jumper settings do I use for the
new drive?
- I think I understand how to physically
install the drive and the cables. Are there
any gotcha's I need to worry about?
- What do I need to do to get XP to recognize
the drive? fdisk? label? format?
Thanks for your help.
Jeff

I'll assume you want to add this drive to your existing setup. If not, you'll need to post back and be more specific.
MJake sure both drives are jumpered to CS (cable select). Go here for instructions on adding this drive:
http://docs.us.dell.com/docs/systems/dim4550/replace.htm#1101572
The new drive should be connected to the middle connector of the IDE cable. After you reboot, go into system setup and set the primary slave device to auto, then reboot to recognize the drive. Windows will recognize the drive and you can partition and format in disk management.

at the BIOS level?
Normally the BIOS detects the new drive automatically, if it doesn't go into the BIOS (press the F2 key immediately after you start the computer) and set the IDE controller for the position on which you installed the drive to "Auto"
- What jumper settings do I use for the
new drive?
Normally Dell computers use Cable Select - since this is a second hard drive you should conform and use the Cable Selet setting.
- I think I understand how to physically
install the drive and the cables. Are there
any gotcha's I need to worry about?
With computers there are always "gotchas", but you usually don't know about them until they get you.
- What do I need to do to get XP to recognize
the drive? fdisk? label? format?
Assuming you are running Windows XP, see the following Seagate site (the instructions are generic and apply to Windows XP - http://www.seagate.com/support/kb/disc/howto/install_xp_disk_mgmt.html
