Autorun Errors

I am having problems with Autorun on my Dimension 4600 running Windows XP Pro.  Both of my optical drives (HL-DT-ST GCR-8481B and NEC ND-1100A) will not Autorun data or audio discs, even though AutoPlay is correctly configured under My Computer.  I have read about a registry edit that fixed this problem under Windows ME, is it a viable option under XP as well?  If not, what are other solutions I can try?  Also, both drives are listed under "Unknown" in the device manager and I have not been able to acquire any drivers that change this status.  Is there a good way to fix this problem, as well.  Thank you very much.

First, the only CD drivers are the ones built into Windows.

There are a couple of things that can be done, to potentially fix your problem.  e.g. the "NVRAM" (non-volitile RAM), a registry tweak (if necessary), etc.

Here is the link to the Predator's site.  Look over the info he has there as he has the NVRAM clearing, etc.

racollins3,

Review the following Microsoft Article to see if it is helpful ..........

According to the Microsoft KB article, my Registry is set correctly.  Also, after skimming The Predator's web site, I uninstalled and reinstalled both of my drives and my Secondary IDE Channel.  While they did reinstall, they still appear under "Unknown Devices" and Autorun still ceases to start.  Additionally, I followed the Dell KB article and reset my NVRAM.  Are there any other suggestions?  Thank you very much.

A search of Google yielded this thread at Annoyances.org ............

Apparently, there may be many reasons for no autorun as well as a number
of solutions.  The thread is long: read through and see if it is helpful.

I've tried the many registry edits indicated in the threads on annoyances.com and they don't seem to have fixed anything.  I'm going to keep messing around in my registry and maybe do some more google searches before giving up, but thanks for all your help and input.  If anyone knows anything else I could try, any ideas are appreciated.  Thanks again.

I found a KnowledgeBase article #817357 on the microsoft support pages that refers to the AutoRun/Play feature.  It refers to a fix that is available from Microsoft, but when you get there it refers you to your computer manufacturer.  I am still bouncing from one to the other to pin this "Fix" down.  You might give it a try and see if you get anywhere
