Can external hard drive be boot device (Linux)?

I have a Inspiron 9300 and understand a second internal HD is not an option. Can I make an external HD bootable as a Linux (FC5 or Solaris 10) device? I have never used a external drive does it act the same as a second internal HD? Will a boot loader see it the same way (GRUB)?

Yes, its possible. The problem is grub install, with partition dell recovery. See http://www.goodells.net/dellutility/index.htm
