Can not end processes

I am having a big problem trying to use my computer. I have programs such as AIM, iTunes, occasionally firefox, norton internet security sometimes, ati tv tuner usb 2.0 sometimes, etc that are in the processes tree in the task manager. when try to open these programs, nothing will load. for an exmpale, aim has about 8 AIM.exe processes listed in the process tree but none of them can be ended with the task manager. while itunes consistantly has one itunes.exe that won't go away and won't open the program. this doens't make any sense to me and it's a huge annoyance. please help me. Thanks in advance.

oh and i have ran many programs such as norton anti virus, adaware, webroot spy sweeper, adsubtract, hijack this!, and registry mechanic. however, none of those have helped.

this is xp pro by the way.

Go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall all of that JUNK you have loaded on your PC.

I've already uninstalled and reinstalled aim, itunes, and the ati tv tuner mulitple times. The problems don't show any improvement at all. If that's what you refer to as "JUNK", they are necessary programs for me. I'm going to try to go into safe mode and then run the ad and virus programs again and see if that helps. If I don't say anything back that means it didn't work. Thanks for the help.
