cannot burn cds or dvds

I have a dell dimension DIM3000 running xpwith a philipps dvd+-rwdvd8631.  I used to be able to do the normal burning of cds and dvds but that no longer works. I can play both fine. When I use media player it says that it encountered a problem when I go to burn anything because instead of burning the music or what ever I get this message "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while burning the file to the disc. For additional assistance, click Web Help."  I have tried the 5 steps listed elsewhere on this site and there is no error in the devise manager.  I will try to add any other info that is needed.

Hi, neumjo:

Sometimes a firmware update will kick start your drive to start burning again. Try that. The download and instructions are here.

I already had that installed, but I reinstalled it and it still does not work.

Try this. Open My Computer, right click your DVD drive and select Properties, then go to the Recording tab and make sure CD recording is enabled.

When you post back, also tell me what blank CDs and DVDs you are using and whether you have used these specific ones successfully before.

CD recording is enabled.  I am using Memorex CD-R 53X, 700mb and Phillips DVD+R 4.7gb 16x.  Both have worked in the past.  I also tried a pioneer drive that still would not burn with media player, but did burn cd's with the Nero program that came with it.

If you're going to add another drive, just make sure the jumper is set to cable select and the drive is turned on in the BIOS. It would be helpful to me if you mentioned the model of the new drive. I have three Pioneer drives and never had any burning problems with any of them.

Check out this article; CD Burning Problems With Windows Media Player. It's got some good troubleshooting ideas.

Let me also mention that I have personally never burned anything using Windows Media Player and can't for the life of me figure out why so many people insist on using such a clunky, quirky program! :D I use Foobar for ripping, organizing, tagging and playing and Nero for burning.
