Try opening the DVD Player software that came with your laptop (WinDVD PowerDVD etc) on your computer and then put the DVD in the drive.

Otherwise use "My Computer" to access/play the DVD drive.

Hope this helps, not quite sure what you mean by a "blank screen"?
