Can't play DVDs.

Hello, a new poster here! I have a Dell Dimension 5150 which i have had for about 6 months. Anyway at first everything was fine and I was able to play audio CDs aswell as DVDs. However I no longer can play DVDs, audio CDs still work fine. When i insert the DVD it searches for it but then when i explore the DVD drive there is nothing there. I have a HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GWA4164B and i'm running Windows XP.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I have the same exact problem. Please can you tell me what you did to solve it. I have Dimension 5150/E510 and it plays/recognizes CDs but DVD is not recognizable.

Are these movies or data dvds?

They are both movies and data DVDs. No DVD is recognized. ONLY CDs are readable.

Hi Peteio & Shahja,

Dell has had a number of issues with this drive, so data or movie is irrelevant at this point.
Run these steps: click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 20, article 3; Section 12, article 10 (ignore the reference to Roxio); Section 15, artilce 13 to verify that the drive is running in DMA mode and not PIO mode.
If either of these helps, great; if not, then try the Dell firmware for the drive, Dell has two; run this one first:
Version A03
If this does not help, then Version A04
If none of this helps, please do not waste any more time with me, contact Dell, request the Tech to reference this thread and respectfully ask for the drive to be replaced (if under warranty). Dell is dealing with this drive on a case by case issue.

Best Regards!

God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do and the eyesight to tell the
difference.
