CD burning/Adaptec problems

I have a Dimension 4100 bought in Spring '01. It came with the Adaptec DirectCD Wizard 3.01d_D5, Easy CD Creator 4, and an LG  CD-RW CED 8080B. I only started saving my many pictures on CD earlier this year, and burned a cd during the summer, otherwise I haven't used this program, which is very confusing to me.

I apologize that this is going to be a bit long. I'm not great with the pc, fearing I'm going to cause a meltdown and lose everything, but I know how to use what I need. With that, I need help in English!

Every time I use DirectCD, the end results are different. I have successfully saved pix on 80-minute music cd-r's. Sometimes I can delete pix from disks, sometimes it doesn't let me. It usually lets me access the saved pix, but sometimes doesn't let me edit them.  Sometimes the pop-up window tells me the disk is readable only, and tells me how to go about making it writable, but it doesn't work.

This summer, I wanted to print out some of my pix that were on the first disk I created, and went to a local store to use the Kodak Picture Maker as I don't have a printer, and this was successful.  Sometime later, I saved other shots to a disk and wanted to print these too, but the Picture Maker couldn't read the pix saved on the disk. I went home to check and the pix were there. I tried saving onto another disk and took this to the store, and still no pix. In the meantime, I have had to throw out a couple of disks because I couldn't delete the jpgs from them and had no need for unusable disks. And I probably ended up formatting each of these disks differently from each other because I just don't understand the program or something.

Do I need an updated version od DirectCD, a new program, or what? Are there instructions in how to use these programs in English so I use it correctly each time? I'm sure this isn't really difficult!

Please help!  thanks alot!

My advice is quit using direct cd. You can accomplish the same with Easy CD Creator data project and much more reliable. This feature is usually included with all versions of Roxio. By using this program rather than direct cd you do not format a cd, you add the pictures to the cd and burn and choose to close the session but leave the cd open. By doing this you may add more pictures later to the same cd until full or cd is closed. In the mean time with the session closed the cd can be read on regular cd drives and will remain reliable. Also the direct cd feature of early versions of Roxio can cause conflicts with other programs on your computer. I now use Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.xxx without Direct Cd installed and do not miss it at all and have eliminated a lot of other problems that were occurring on my computer.

thanks Jimmy. you say you're using Easy CD Creator 5.something... sounds like an upgraded version of what I have- is there a free download of this?  I have to tell ya- I used easy cd creator during one of my attempts and I'm not sure that all was fine with it as you mentioned, but I'll try it again.

thanks for your help!

There are free updates for Roxio 5.0 Easy CD Creator but no free downloads. However there are two newer versions of Roxio the latest being Roxio Easy Media Creator 7.0 that is designed to work with DVD burning as well as CD's. You're version should be able to work with data without using the direct cd option. Hope this helps a little, I have experienced the same frustration with direct cd before giving up on it.

Hi Bklyn Gal,

I agree with Jimmy on the use of Roxio`s Mastering program over Direct CD. I do believe Roxio still has the latest update for version 4 on their web site.
I have some of Roxio`s support articles listed on the CD/RW if per chance you wanted to review them. Starts around Section 25 and goes through Section 47.

Best Regards

God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do and the eyesight to tell the
difference.
