The first thing to do is test the drive using the Dell diagnostics. Then you'll know if the problem is with the drive itself or something else. When you perform the READ test, you'll be prompted to insert a data disc. If the disc stays in and the read test passes, then we can start looking at other issues. If you insert the disc and the drive ejects it, then your drive definitely needs to be replaced.
Again, this is just a test. The diagnostics are not intended to fix problems, just diagnose them.
the Dell diagnostics have just been finish. I got the following error message: "00F00:133C DISK - read error, check the disk". Does that mean I have to remove/exchange my CD device or could this problem be fixed by any driver/software update?
There was no CD in the drive. Should there have been one? The diagnostics didn't advise me to insert a CD. But afterwards, when the laptop had finish the start sequence I tried to insert an audio CD, with the same result as in the beginning: clicking noise and fast ejecting.
When you perform the READ test, you must insert a data disc (as I explained above). A music CD will not work. If the disc stays in and the read test passes, then we can start looking at other issues. If you insert the disc and the drive ejects it, then your drive definitely needs to be replaced.
Again, this is just a test, not meant to repair the drive.

Which CD was in the drive when you ran the test?
