CD device not reconized by computer

I crashed my system by trying to go to xp sp3 and need to install xp again. I have a bootable cd for xp. I have a dell dimension 8300 with a dvd and cd drive. The setup screen sees both hard drives but says the cd are not installed.

even though the drives light up etc. Is it a driver problem? Not sure where to go from here. Any help would be great.

Hi, Grantman:

Let me recommend this guide to reinstall your operating system and device drivers.

Now, it sounds like you are successfully booting your system using your XP disc. Is that correct? So at what point exactly are you starting to have trouble. If you are getting an error message, please write it down and post it exactly as you see it.

No the problem is that the system get to the F2 system setup and the F12

In the system setup I try to set the cd a the boot drive but the cd shows not installed. I have checked the cable and the power. The cd drives have power and the drive light comes on when you insert a CD.

I can run the system check and it see the SATA drives and can run the diag on the hard drives.

I just cannot use my bootable XP cd to load the system because the system does not see the CD drive.

Let me suggest you do the following:
1. Open up the system, pull out the IDE cable to your CD drive and re-seat it.
2. Boot to system setup and reset BIOS defaults.

Then reboot and check if your drive is seen by the BIOS.

HI osprey4,

Thanks great tips, I reseted the IDE cd cables but no luck system still does not see the drives. But they have power and light blink etc. I did the reset of the bios stiil does not see the cd or dvd drive. When you look in the F2 setup at bootable sequence says that cd is not installed. The system sees the SATA drives but no cd.

Thanks for your help

Ok, I think one of your drives has gone bad. So the way to sort this out is to remove one at a time, keeping the other one plugged into the end of the IDE cable. You'll need to reset the BIOS each time.
