There is a Firmware update for this drive that you

Look in the Device Manager:

Click START in the task bar and select Control Panel.
In Classic View, double click System
Select the Hardware tab.
Select Device Manager
Click the (+) next to CDROM.

The Brand and Model of CD Drive will be shown.  While you
are in the Device Manager, is there an Error Code?

i downloaded what you just sent.

I still have the same problem.  When there is a blank disk in the drive a message keeps telling me to insert a disk.  It will NOT recognize a blank cd-r or cd-rw

I have exactly the same problem.  I have a Dimension 8250 with the same CD/DVD drive (NEC DVD+RW ND-1100A).  The drive plays CDs and DVDs OK but cannot read blank DVD-Rs (TDK DVD-R4.7 single sided).  I have downloaded all the latest drivers and am running Roxio CD/DVD Creator 6.  I am also running the latest patches for that as well.

I can burn CDs OK and I have also been able to burn some DVD+RWs. However every DVD I have ever burnt with this drive has been corrupted at some stage when trying to add further files to it.  I have spent soooo much time trying to sort this out and also wasted a lot of money on DVD RWs which I have had to throw away.  Once the DVD is corrupted it is impossible to read and even attempting to read causes the computer to hang, so it impossible to run recovery software on it.

I bought this burner pre-installed as part of my original system from Dell specifically to allow me to archive data onto DVD. But I just cannot trust it.  I still don't know if the problem is with the drive, the firmware or CD/DVD writing software.  I received some technical support from Roxio who sent me instructions to delete and rebuilt various device registry entries.  The fix seemed to work initially, but the drive soon reverted to the same problem.

Does anyone know if this drive is known to have a problem with reading and burning and DVDs ?  It is interesting that others experiencing the exact same problem with the same drive (which makes me think it might be the drive and not Roxio).  However it is going to be hard to convince Dell that it is a hardware problem when it can read and write CDs and read DVDs OK.

Any tips much appreciated.

Thanks.

Your "problems" have nothing to do with what akgills posted! You should start a new thread not attach unrelated posts to an existing thread.

Your burner will never recognize blank DVD 'dash' media, it only burns to DVD 'plus' media.

Adding Sessions to a Data DVD with V6 is pretty straightforward. Getting XP to read them, may not be…

What version of Windows XP are you running; SP1 or SP2?
What CD burning software is installed?
Did it used to see blank CDRs and CDRWs and recently stopped?
Have you recently changed brands of media?
Does it see blank DVD media?

Go to Predators Web Site here ........

Go to Section 15 and review Articles 1, 14 and 17.
Go to Section 20, Article 3

Other than that, I'm at a stop.  If this does not help, list
the problem and all the things we tried and repost so some
of the other folks can try to continue helping you.

For the version of Windows XP you have, select START, then click Run.
type winver and click OK.

One last item, Use the Downloads under Product Support
at the top of the page and enter your system information.
I think there may be an update to RecordNow that you may
want to try.

Skybird,

Apologies for replying incorrectly.  My tired eyes misread the fact that the thread was to do with CD-R and not DVD-R.   Many thanks for taking the trouble to point out that DVD-R was not compatible with my drive.  I had completely overlooked that fact ! You saved me further wasted hours trying to get those disks to work at least !

DVD / CD seems a bit of a minefield unless you are an expert.  I just wish that manufacturers would develop a true plug and play product.  My computer is simply a tool.  I don't expect to have to become an expert in every detail of every peripheral just to get the bloomin' thing to work !  This was the main reason for buying it as a package from Dell after all.  Imagine if the same nonsense prevailed in the car industry and you purchased a car from Ford only to spend the next 6 months of your life trying to work out the most appropriate jumper settings on the engine management system for your particular combination of optional extras....grrrr...computers.  Thank heavens there are people like Skybird and Predator around to help !

Thanks again for your time and patience (given my poor knowledge in this area).

Cheers,

R

akgills,

I am not an expert, but just to return the favour to Skybird I can answer some of your questions.

1.  To find out which version of Windows XP you are running, click on the START menu (bottom LH corner of screen), then click on "My Computer" then click on "View System Information" in the Systems tasks list in the top LH corner of the window that opens.

2.  Media - yes he means the type of CDs that you are using.  Not just the brand (e.g. TDK, Memorex etc) but also the type e.g. CD-R, CD+R etc

3. Yes a DVD will record anything that a CD will record (assuming you can get the bloomin' thing to work !), but you can get almost 5Gigabytes (5000Mbyes) of data on a DVD whereas CDs can only store 560-700Mbytes, so DVDs are a lot more convenient as a back-up medium for example.

Not sure if I have helped or led you astray (waits sheepishly for Skybird to correct all the mistakes).

Good Luck mister !
