CD-ROM and CD-RW Drives not recognized

Following instalation of protection SW, both drives failed to work (HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8481B and Samsung CD-ROM SC-148C).  On Device Manager both drives are shown with solid yellow circle with "!" in center.  When reloading driver from Device Manager, receive message: "Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device (code 41)".  Actions taken:  1.  Removed data calble from drives individually and status of connected drive did not change.  2.  Uninstalled protection SW and fault remained.  Have now reinstalled protection software.  3.  Ran diagnostic program and primary IDE drive or hard drive passed but secondary IDE or CD drives not supported, but doubtful that both CD drives failed at same time.  4.  Have individually uninstalled and then reinstalled each CD drive hardware without success.  5.  CD trays open and close normally and data lights flash during turn-on, so I assume Power source is good.

I have not reinstalled driver SW because what I have is on a CD which is little help and I can not select appropriate driver SW from Dell web site for download.  Driver SW is identified as Microsoft, dated 7/1/2001 version 5.1.2535.0.  Final bit of information is operating system is Microsoft XP home edition and computer is model 2350.  Help!!

The code 41 error is generally solved by deleting upper/lower filters as described here:
