CD-R/RW SW-252S cannot burn cds
I have a Dimension 4600 (Pentium 4 CPU 3.0GHz, 2Gb RAM) running Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 with an HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8162B (DVD ROM) drive in the top bay (drive D)and a Samsung CD-R/RW SW-252S (Ultra Speed CD) drive in the bottom bay (drive E).
The Samsung CD drive reads audio, music, etc. CD's just fine. I've used it for playing CD's for almost 2 years now without any trouble, but I never tried to write with it until last week. When I try to write/burn to the Samsung CD drive with Roxio EasyCD Creator 5, I get an error at the end that says to use another CD because it was unable to finish writing. When I try to use Windows drag & drop utility, the drive seems to spin around for a bit and then it completely hangs my entire machine -- have to unplug the pc to get it to reboot.
I have tried two different types of media for writing: Maxell CD-R 80min/700MB and Maxell CD-RW 4x/700MB/80min. With the CD-R I get the same results listed above. With the CD-RW, I get a message saying to insert a CD.
I've read the messages on the board and tried/looked at everything that was suggested, as best as I could. I removed Sonic. I made sure that the hard drive was cleaned (with Disk Cleanup) and defragmented (with Disk Defragmenter) and had plenty of available space (60Gb free) and no other applications actively running. I updated the CD driver from Dell. I updated Roxio from Dell. I checked Device Manager to make sure that "DMA if available" was set for the "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers." I ran the Dell diagnostic (F12 at boot) on the Samsung CD drive and it came back as okay (of course, it doesn't do a write test). None of this changed the situation; if anything, it seems to hang with both the CD-R and CD-RW disks now.
I'm guessing there is probably something obvious that I have overlooked which will solve this. Thanks in advance.

Hi Ms PotatoHead,
OK, bad news, Windows XP SP2 sort of broke Roxio version 5. Some People were able to get it to work but in the end it was more trouble than it was worth. Since you mentioned having Sonic, Consider using Roxio`s Zap program to remove version 5 and try installing Sonic again, or unfortunately purchase software compatible with XP SP2. Click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 47, article 11 for information on Roxio Zap
Best Regards

Thanks for the quick response. I'll try the Zap Roxio, reinstall the Sonic RecordNow 6.5 and update it. I'll let you know how it works.
Thanks again.

Many Thanks Predator!
I followed your suggestion and the Samsung CD will now burn CDs with Sonic RecordNow. Thanks!
One last note: I seemed to recall reading some negative messages about the Sonic DLA, so I didn't install that portion of the program (it lets you exit the install program after installing Sonic RecordNow but before the DLA install starts). My guess is that if I need it in the future, I can always install it then.
Many thanks again!

Hi Ms PH,
DLA is Sonic`s Packet Writing program and being slightly blunt, it seems to cause more issues than it is worth, not installing it was a good move in my opinion; you will not miss it.
Best wishes and good luck with your system...
