CD/DVD does not recognize blank CD's

My Sony CDRWDVD CRX310EE does not recognize blank CD's.  Reads Audio, DVD, and data.  Insert a blank CD and it keeps asking to insert a disk.  It has not worked since I took it out of the box in January.

Hi Klandtet,

Have you tried uninstalling / reinstalling your burning software? You did not mention the name of the software, if it was factory installed by Dell then more than likely it is Sonic. I believe Dell has some updates for Sonic as well.

Best Regards!

God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do and the eyesight to tell the
difference.

im having the same problem, neither windows media player nor sonic will recognize a blank disc. it just keeps asking me to put one in. i dled the updated driver for the cd/dvd player, didnt fix it. i uninstalled the driver and reinstalled again to no luck. is it a problem with the hardware itself?

Sounds exactly the same here.  Media Player, Sonic, and Media Center just keep asking for a blank disk.  I have tried 3 different brands of CD's with no luck.

after searching around the forums ive read about a few people that have had the problem and the fix has always been software related. i'll search for a sonic and media player update. i hope it works!!

I'll throw my hat into the ring ...

I have a Dimension 3000 ... same problem. Won't recognize blank CDs on any of my three burning programs (Sonic RecordNow, Media Player, MusicMatch). I've tried three different brands of blank CDs; same ones burn just fine on a friend's computer. Blank DVDs work just fine, however.

When I put a blank CD in the E drive, the drive light comes on, there's four clicking sounds, then the light goes off. Previously -- when I was able to burn a CD -- on occasion I would have to eject the CD a time or two before it would be recognized. Could this have been the software beginning to go bad?

After checking around at work, my IT specialist tells me he replaced a CD burner under warranty on a new Dell computer last year.  The problem had the same symptoms.  Acording to him, the burn function on the drive is different from the read function and the burn function is not initializing resulting in a rejected blank CD.  Two ways to confirm this problem are to test the drive on another computer or replace the drive and see if a new one works.

Having a problem happen sporadically then completly fail sounds more like a hardware problem to me.  Seem like a software problem would just fail one day.

ive had a dell rep remote into my computer, as well as doing a system restore to 3 months ago when the burner worked. the drive actually tests good in the diagnostic test on boot up, but i think the next step is them replacing the drive. this is the second this drive has had problems
