My dell 2350 did the same thing about three months after I got it.I got a new one from dell after a lot of time on the phone with tech support.

BTW mine was a samsung cd/rw

Yes,Dell sent me a hitachi cd/rw and its been working ever since.

My computer is a Dimension 2400 and there is not brand name for the cd and dvd drives.  It is about two years old.

Please go to Device Manager, click the "+" next to CD/DVD drives and list the name/model of the drive(s)here.

the first drive is cd-r/rw sw-248f samsung and then samsung dvd-rom sd-616t
