Look in the Device Manager .............

Start | Control Panel | System in classic view | Hardware tab | Device Manager

Click on the (+) next to DVD/CD-ROM drives.  Right-click the drive and select
Properties.  Is there an Error Code (number)?

Welcome to the forum, Dean3. :smileyhappy: Are you running Windows Vista? Are you using iTunes and if so have you upgraded it recently? Also, what games have you installed recently?

Dean3: Did you delete the filters as suggested in Skybird's post and if so did you make a backup of the registry first? Also if you deleted the filters did your drives show up again?

Do you have more than one optical drive (cd/dvd) on your system? What about emulation software such as Daemon Tools or Alcohol? Spore's DRM protection (SecuROM) could be a cause for the drive(s) disappearance especially if you have more than one drive or if you are using emulation software. Did you notice the drive(s) missing after you installed Spore?

Skybird:

Hi I'm new here in the forum and I'm having a problem with my CD/DVD drive not functioning properly. I have a Dimension 1100/B110 desktop by Dell. Well the warrenty has expired on it. I'm running Windows XP home. I followed these steps:

Look in the Device Manager .............

Start | Control Panel | System in classic view | Hardware tab | Device Manager

Click on the (+) next to DVD/CD-ROM drives.  Right-click the drive and select
Properties

I didn't receive an error message another tab DVD/CD-ROM drives Properties "General-and then it just shows the DVD/CD icon. This is the type of drive I have TSST corp CDRWDVD TS-H492C drive. I can play and record CD's but unable to play DVD or record them. When I go into "properties" in the actual DVD/CD (E) in the "My Computer" folder it shows that the drive is full. I've install software "RealPlayer" and "Direct DVD 8 SE" in order to listen to the CD's and watch my DVD's what's going on someone please help me.

Thanks

kingbt37,

The TSST TS-H492C is a Combo (CDRW/DVD-ROM) Drive.  It is
unable to write to DVD media, however it should be able to
read them.

What kind of DVD are you trying to read?  Movie or data?
If you double-click the drive in My Computer when a DVD is
inserted, can you see the contents?

What DVD Decoder software is on the system?  Or, try VLC Media
Player
to play a DVD movie .......

Thanks for the information. I install a sonic decoder from online. I am trying to record a DVD know the type of CD/DVD drvie that I have I see why it wouldn't work. Would I have to buy seperate hardware and have it installed onto my computer in order to record onto DVD-R disk? Let me know if so what type or is there some software that I can purchase or download.

Thanks

In order to burn DVD media, you would need to add a DVD Burner.
You can replace the present drive or add a DVD Burner as a second
drive.  Your system uses an IDE (not SATA) device.  They are
available for $20-$30 or so and a good place to check is
www.newegg.com .
