CDRW/DVD Combo doesn't appear in my computer after using windows component wizard

I went into the disk cleanup and used the windows component wizard to remove a few things, after realizing that i up my internet explorer I tried to go back to the same program and undo my mistakes. It asked me to put in my windows XP CD, but the computer won't recognize the drive. I've looked in the device manager, and the drivers are their, but I judt don't think I have access to the drive anymore. can anyone help?

Have you tried using System Restore to return to a point before you deleted the Windows files?

Yes, But that day I also eliminated old restore points. Like I said, I made a grievous blunder that day. I am just computer savvy enough to really screw things up.

For the last few days, I've noticed that sometimes my CD/DVD drive doesn't appear under 'my computer' either.  I am able to solve the problem by rebooting, but I can't understand why it is suddenly not showing as the drive was already installed when I bought my laptop.  I will say that if I go to the control panel, system, and look under device manager and explore a bit, the drivers are there and the troubleshooter says all is working fine...it's just the actual E drive doesn't appear as being on my computer.

I am unable to do system restore for some odd reason.  That option hasn't worked in months and don't know why  because if that worked, I could probably easily solve the problem.  Does anyone know why this might be happening and how to resolve it permanently?  Thanks
