Changing a CD-rw
Hello,
My wife's computer is a 4100 but the CD-rw is terrible. (I have posted about
this before and nothing works to help it) In another post, someone
recommended either a Plextor or Pioneer. On my computer I just have a DVD player
but not a burner which I also want to switch out with a Plextor Px-716a.
But since I have never tried to switch out a Cd-rom, I want to try it on my
wife's computer first. I have searched the Dell website for a page on how to
change CD-roms. So far, I haven't been able to find one. I know they have to have
one because they seem to have a page on everything else. Does anyone know
where I might find info on changing a Cd-rom? You also have to take into account
that I am a baby boomer and I have to have pictures and all that. (Or at least a
diagram)
Thanks,
Bill

Hi Bill,
John may jump in here with some additional instructions, he has a soft spot for the 4100 series!!
Here is the Dell User Guides which includes the pictures you asked for:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dzuul/rr.htm
A couple of things up front; Dell uses the Cable Select Jumper Feature, so you should place the small plastic jumper on the back of the drive over the two pins labled for Cable Select, either CS, CSEL or even Cable.
Also although not set in stone but a good habit, first go to Device Manager, select the CD-ROM you are remove and click on Uninstall or Remove (whichever) and then shutdown. Remove and install your new drive.
Section 4 of the CD/RW link in my post has some additional tips as well.
Best Regards
God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do and the eyesight to tell the
difference.

Bill:
I have nothing to add to Jeff's advice, but I certainly like the way you think, trying this on the wife's machine first. :) If you have any trouble, we're here.

Hi Bill,
Yes, all standard optical drives use the 5.25" bays, whether CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, CD/RW or DVD/RW.
As far as the PC, knock on wood, my Dell 1998 R400 is still clicking along.
Best Regards
