Check disk message on boot up

About every 2nd time I re-boot, I get a message saying the computer is about to perform a "Check disk" procedure unless I press any key in a few seconds.  If I let it perform the procedure, it goes for about 10 minutes listing areas that are unreadable.  Is this a sign of a disk problem, or just a routine check?  What do I need to do about it?

No, this is not routine. It may indicate a failing drive. Back up all of your important stuff. Then download and run the Dell diagnostics for your hard drive.
