COMMAND.COM question

Hey everyone.  Well I have recently been working on a computer for someone that is unable to log into windows.  They needed me to retreive files off the computer before they get rid of it.  So I booted the computer in DOS and each time I attempted to access files on the c: it would give me less and less acess...meaning it would have drive error read problems etc.  And now im to the point where it is booting to a black screen with a message 'Type The Name Of The Command Interpreter'.  I have no idea what this means...any help would be very much appreciated.  Thank You.

Sounds highly likely the drive is failing. Run the Dell diagnostics on the drive, including a full surface scan (the diagnostic CD is bootable even if the hard drive is not).

Sorry im very noob with this what do I do once the cd is in?

Boot from it, and follow the prompts - it will lead you through the diagnostics.
