Computer crashes while using DVD drive

Whenever I play a DVD, no matter what DVD playing software I use (Windows Media Player, Real Player, PowerDVD), the DVD plays fine until I move my mouse...then the computer immediately freezes up. CTRL+ALT+DEL doesn't work; I have to use the power button to turn the computer off.

I've updated the DVD drive device driver; still crashes.

I have a Dell Optiplex GX 280

Windows XP SP3

DVD is a teac dvd+rw dv-w58e

Welcome to the forum, greglong. :smileyhappy:

1) What type of connection does your mouse have (e.g. ps2, usb)?

2) Does the computer freeze when you are using any other software?

3) Are you able to play cd's without any problems?

4) Were you able to play DVD's at one time and if so have you installed any new software since that time?

Thanks for the welcome!

1) USB

2) No

3) Yes

4) Good question...Yes, I have installed software, but I do so not infrequently. Also, I'm not really sure when this problem started--within the last few months, I suspect.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the drive as well as the IDE controller, but no luck. I also ran a Dell Diagnostics hardware test on the drive, and everything checked out OK.

greglong, I know this will sound strange but I'm not sure that the drive is the cause of the crashes. Based on the information given my initial thoughts lean toward three possible causes: usb, memory or video adapter issues.

Here are the things that I would try (one at a time testing the dvd playback after each):

1) Move mouse to a different usb port

2) Check usb controllers in device manager to see if there are any conflicts

3) Memory test using Dell Diagnostics (iirc there is an option to test the memory only when you run a custom test so that you don't have to wait forever for the tests to run - no need to check playback after this one)

4) Update the video adapter driver

Let me know if any of these solves the issue or if not what the results are.

1) Moved mouse to a different port...still crashed.

2) Checked usb controllers in device manager...no problems.

3) Ran Dell Diagnostics on memory...no problems.

4) Updated video drivers...BINGO! NO MORE CRASHING WHILE WATCHING A DVD!

Brilliant! Thanks wk for your help.

BTW, the display adapters that needed updating are RADEON X300 Series.
