Computer not Recognizing CD Drive

My computer is no longer recognizing the CD/CDRW/DVD Drive. I'm not sure what caused it? I have recently installed Roxio 10, but it had been working fine with this software, I've also run things like Registry mechanic and CC cleaner, I tend to think that maybe one of these things caused the problem? I didn't use either of them before the problem occurred. I have followed the steps listed on the forum and microsoft's page, uninstalling the software, deleting the upper and lower registry keys in the control sets, then uninstalling and reinstalling the driver/device, but none of this has helped, when I try to reinstall the device Windows says there was a problem, and I get the code 39 again. I've system restored as far back as I could.....couldn't go back very far, but that didn't help....hmmm? I'm not sure what to do or where to go from here? any advice or help would be much appreciated!! Thanks Brian

hmm, are you 100% sure you've deleted the correct upper and lowerfilters?

Yeah, I'm sure, that's what baffles me a bit, I've heard that this has worked for so many others, but I've gone back to check again and again, you tell me if I've done something wrong, this is what I did: 1. regedit 2. HKey Local Machine 3. System 4. Control Set 001 5. Control 7. Class 8. 4D36E965-E325-11C-BFC1-08002BE103118 9. Deleted Upper and Lower files 6. Restarted Computer (also uninstalled and reinstalled without a restart) 7. Uninstalled device, reinstalled device. I also did this for Control Set 002, and Current Control Set, and I also went back and deleted upper and lower.bak files per another discussion, still same ...Code 39 device problem installing device, drivers may be missing or corrupt. Same Problem Did I miss something? Thanks Brian

hmm, looks like you got the correct path the first time.

I'm thinking of installing a DVD-RW drive soon, how will this problem affect that? If I install a new drive is the computer going to recognize it? Could the drive I have possibly be dead? I would really rather fix this problem now, before I upgrade, the DVD-RW drive will be a later update for me.

you need to sort this out now or else you'll have the same problem with a different drive.

I've checked the registry over and over and I've deleted the right files, but still no cd drive, it appears in the device manager with a yellow exclamation point, but I can't get it to show in My Computer, or play a disk?? Any other possibilities or suggestions by anyone???

Any other option for me to try? Anything else that could cause the computer to not recognize the cd drive? Anyone??
