confing_list_failed
Hi all
My vostro 1500 has been playing up recentley, when vista updated it swallowed up thirty or forty gig of free space. Once I sorte this out it was okay for about three weeks then when I turned it on, it did the usual loading screen but then rather than going on to vista it tried to load Dell Media Device.
Then I get a blue screen of death that includes the delightful term CONFIG_LIST_FAILED with the following string:
STOP 0X000000073 (0X00000001, 0XC000017D, 0X00000002, 0XF6AE6BB8)
After looking this up, the similar problem in XP seemed to suggest a complete filling of the hard drive, therefore not allowing enough space for the log files to initiate.
So I got Knoppix running and went in to see if I could delete/remove some unwanted files.
Then to my surprise it showed that there were three partitions on the disk.
The laptop is configure more or less exactly as it came from DELL, and as far as I was aware there were was drive C with the OS, program files etc. and then RECOVERY which held, well... the recovery files.
But knoppix is showing a third partition named DELL MEDIA. It has all the trappings of a complete set up, it even has a windows folder, admin, all users etc etc.
Also my original idea of deleting unwante files seems to be a no go as I get denied when I try.
How on earth could this have happened? And more importantly, does anyone know how to fix it?
thanks for your time and consideration!
Os
HAH! Belay the last, it's that stupid button! Why didn't I know this partition was on the puter??
All fixed, general stupidity abated.
Thanks all

Hello, I've had the same problem with my XPS M1530 Laptop. Instead of the usual load screen, I get tha Dell Media Direct load screen and then the blude screen of death with the same "config_list_failed" message. I don't understand exactly what you did to fix it though. It sounds like you used some different button, but it boots the same whether I start the computer with the Dell Media Direct button or the regular power button. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
