It would appear to be a software issue, rather than a CD/DVD drive issue. The drive just transfers data, as requested from the software - it doesn't know if you have a game CD, an audio CD, etc - it's all just "data" to the drive.
Are these games older games that you used on non Windows XP operating system? Some of these games will not run on a Windows XP system. Some of the older games will run in a compatibility mode, but the game must be installed on the PC first, not run from the CD.
I've got a couple of games that require the CD to be loaded in the drive for the game to run, but FIRST the game had to be installed on the PC (e.g. Duke Nukem - Manhattan project). I had to dump a lot of older games because they were not Windows XP compatible.
