crash?

I have a dimension 8100 Windows ME. It froze up yesterday-happens ocassionally. When I rebooted, it began an automatic scan of hard drive, but never completed it. After a few minutes of being frozen in the scan, the screen goes solid black with a green line across the top. This green line is composed of a multitude of short, vertical lines. I shut down the computer, reboot it, and the exact thing happens again.

Is this a hard drive crash? If so, how hard is it to replace a hard drive? I am more concerned about reinstalling software. I did it once before but that was years ago. Is there a link that could walk me through it?

Thanks.....

It does sounds to me like a hard drive problem. Your hard drive isn't hard to replace but it can cost if your sytem is under warranty...(obviously). There probably is a link, but if you call tech support at 1- 800 - 822-8965, you will be able to get a hold of somebody who will walk you through opening your tower and testing your hard drive. If they diaganose your problem as being the hard drive then you can talk to them about getting somebody from dell to come to your home (or work) and put the hard drive in for you. They probably won't reinstall the softwere for you so then you can call dell tech support and they will walk you thorugh getting it all installed and everything back to normal.

I own a dimention 4600 myself. A while back ago my hard drive died. When I turned on my system the screen would show the dell symbol and then it would come to a black screen with white writing. It made this really wierd clicking noise. I followed all those steps and got everything working normally in a matter of a few days. There might be an easier way, but that what I got. Hope it helps!
