Cyberlink problem

In January, I replaced my DVD writer and with the package came Cyberlink Power to Go 4.

I noticed that my Media Player music files were about 80% converted to Cyberlink Power DVD 6..the rest remained WMP files - no problem.

This week, I got a message that the '30 day trial is over', contacted Cyberlink and was asked to photograph the DVD (despite giving the CD code from the disc and being registered as a Silver member on their website).

Did this and received a link to download 'OEM2CH.1417'...started this with some difficulty and found it was over 300MB and 1 hour 35 minute download on my Broadband connection...as the existing Cyberlink is around 30MB I cancelled the download and asked for advice - no reply so far.

I then tried to delete the existing  program from Add/Remove - not possible - nor from Programs.

Any thoughts? If I do manage to delete Cyberlink, do I risk losing the music files which it stole from WMP? Can I convert the files back to WMP.

Although this problem does not seem to be related to any difficulty with your CD/DVD drive, let me make few suggestions.

First, I do not believe Cyberlink Power DVD converted any of your files. Rather, the installation routine simply changed the file association so that they open with PowerDVD rather than WMP or some other program. This is typical of Cyberlink and other intrusive applications that assume you want your computing life to revolve around them. :)

The way to fix this is to re-associate the file types with your preferred music player. This article shows you how to undo the damage done by Cyberlink:

If you would like to uninstall Cyberlink PowerDVD and use something else to view your movies, consider the free VLC Media Player, which can be installed without trying to change your life:

Osprey,

Many thanks - I will do as you advise...I already have the VLC Player from advice you gave me about a year ago.

Cyberlink have now advised me to remove folders thro regedit...which I have done...and have given me another download link to reinstall PowerDVD software.

I will think carefully before I do this...

Thanks again for your help.

Osprey,

I have changed the files to Media Player as you advised...thought to mention, where the article says "Click on My Computer, then click on View option"...I found the Folder Options under Tools not Views - article is from 2001  so maybe explains this change.

The solution works..my thanks again.
