"Cyclic Redundancy Check" error message

I just recieved my Dimension 8400 and as I begin to transfer files from CDs to my new Hard drive the system stops after a few downloads and I get a Cyclic Redundancy Check error message. I am currently running CHKDSK but it is taking forever to complete. Any ideas?

It probably has nothing to do with your hard drive.  The data that you are transferring is being corrupted during the transfer.  How are you doing the data transfer?

I am doing the data transfer via drag and drop from a CD-R and I tried a CD\RW as well. And now my system won't even boot. As soon as it starts i get the Dell Logo screen for just a few seconds and then a black screen with a blue bar pops up.  The screen says "Loading PBR for descriptor 2...Done"  Then A disk read error occured press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart...no matter how many times i do this...i get the same message.

That message refers to the image restore partition.  Either call Dell and demand an exchange or do a fresh install of XP and your apps.

if you have a usb device connected to the computer (not a keyboard, nor mouse), it can cause the same message, too. in that situation: restart the computer, press F2 when the blue DELL logo appears to enter the bios screen, look for the USB EMULATION option (usually under Basic Device Configuration), and disable it. press ESCAPE to save the changes and restart the computer. now you can plug the usb device and the computer will restart fine ;-)
