Data transfer speed comparison
I'm using my M70 as a digital audio workstation and I'm trying to optimize it to reduce dropouts during recording and playback. I originally purchased it with the basic 40GB 5400RPM hard drive which was a big mistake--I should've gotten the 7200RPM drive.
I also purchased a 3-port Firewire PC card (shame on Dell for not including a Firewire port on a high-end multimedia workstation!) and I connected a Seagate 80GB 7200RPM external hard drive to it.
Would it be considerably faster performance if I had simply upgraded the internal hard drive to a 7200RPM drive? Or is the transfer speed negligible compared to the Firewire connected drive that I shouldn't really worry?
Also, is there a test available to check the transfer speeds for my setup?

it will tell you your burst rates, transfer speeds and cpu useage during both.
not to sure about the FW opposed to internal speed differences, i would assume from the external hard drive to the chipset controller would be considerably faster as FW is what, 500mb transfer speeds? where as typical ide and or sata is roughly 100-150 mb burste rates. but the question now would be, how slow it processes the FW data to the chipset and on to the cpu. i really dont know to be honest if using external FW opposed to a internal drive is any faster or slower, maybe someone else can help explain that.
