Dell Floppy Disk Module

Hi,

First time poster looking for a solution to a problem that I can't figure out. Hoping the community can help me out.

I use an external floppy disk drive with my Dell Dimension 3000 work PC (though floppys are prehistoric, they're the only disk drive that are compatible with one of my older embroidery machines). Today, however, I ran into a problem with the external drive.

Every time I plug in the external floppy my PC crashes and I'm brought to a Blue Error screen where I'm forced to restart. If it's not plugged in the computer works fine. I've tried updating my drivers for all USB ports, floppy disk drives, and floppy disk controllers using the Hardware Update Wizard through Device Manager, however I'm being told that it can't find a better match than the drivers I already have.

Starting to think that the drive itself has failed and it's time for a replacement.

Thanks,

Dave

Hi Dave,

What's the error?

When I plug the external drive in, Windows notifies through the Start Menu that new hardware was found and that it's being installed.

Next, the computer crashes and brings me to a blue screen. It states:

"A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable to driver or check with manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any VIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer....

Technical information:

***STOP: 0X0000007E (0XC0000005, 0XF89A0A05, 0XF8B4784C, 0XF8B47548)

*** USBSTOR.SYS - ADDRESS F89A0A05 base at F89A0000, DateStamp 480254d1

Beginning dump of physical memory...."

Assuming most of that message isn't necessary besides the technical information, but I didn't want to leave anything out.

Thanks for asking Osprey.

There's a Fixit for general USB problems. Try this.
