Dell Solid State Hybrid Drive Poor Performance

We purchased some Dell Mobile Precision M2800 CTO laptops with the 1TB (5.400 Rpm) Solid State Hybrid Drive with 8GB Flash.

This drive CRAWLS. We loaded a 10G file into MySql and it took 2.5 days. The same file on another Dell 7200 SATA took 20 minutes. We have the same issue with all the laptops.

Dell seems to not admit that these drives have faulty performance. We need to replace them. We would like to replace with 7200 SATA but Dell refuses. Any ideas?

DO NOT BUY THESE DRIVES!

I think we paid in excess of $200 for this option. The HGST 7200rpm 1TB with 32MB cache is only $65 on NewEgg... Why Dell why?

Hi Cooper_65613,

What OS? What does the Intel RST show for SATA transfer rate?

I'm sure you understand that hybrid drives are conventional hard disk drives with a large cache for frequently accessed files. So a hybrid is not going to show improved performance over any other hard drive for transfers of large files.

I understand but it should show a little as it operates as a very large cache. Instead, it is running like a factor of 100x slower on very large files. Something is wrong with these drives. They operate fine with little 10-100MB files. Give it a 10G and they CHOKE, where a SATA keeps humming along.

I googled and didn't find it. How do you find the Intel RST rate? I only found info on raid drivers.

Again, what OS? The Intel RST should be accessible via the system tray icon.

And you checked the Intel RST and found what?

I'm trying to help but you're not responding to my questions.

The laptops performance have been so bad that we are not using them and taking them home. I will have to wait till sometime this week to turn one on and use it. Really its Sunday...
