Replace the SATA hard drive, unless the drive spins, the only way to recover the data, is to use a data recovery company and that will be very expensive. If the drive spins, then after you've installed the replacement, XP, drivers and applications etc, install the old hard drive as the secondary and see if you can transfer the files you need, to the new drive.
Thanks, I am going to replace it regardless but it was just wierd it had me second guessing because sometimes it would read the HD and other times it wouldn't but even when the BIOS could read it, it wouldn't boot.
