Diagnostic test error, ide device????

inspiron 5100
ok i ran the diagnostics express test last night first i get an error message:

Error Code: 0F00:133D
MSG: IDE device failed: Incompatible cd for testing

then it went through the IDE Disk: confidence test, taking over 2 hrs!

the computer has ran super slow lately, takes 10min to just start up. was told by best buy that needs a new motherboard, dell said new memory, i was told on here from a few guys overheating, but I think its more of a harddrive problem. the warranty is up dell is no help. anyone that can offer any advice/assistant would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Eric

When you read the entire error message it tells you to insert a CD with data written to it to complete the test. The diagnostics performs a read test of the data to verify that the drive can read a CD. You can choose to ignore this part of the test sequence and continue testing the rest of the system or you can insert a CD and let it do its thing (about 5 seconds). 2 hours for the disk test seems too long unless you selected the extended test sequence when you booted to the diagnostics.

Run scan disk or check disk and see what that tells you. If the drive tests good, remove the memory and reseat it. S-u-c-k the dust out of the heatsink vents with a powerful antistatic vacuum cleaner, wipe the hard drive and do a fresh reinstall of Windows and your Dell drivers.

If that doesn't do it buy a new computer instead of throwing big bucks down the drain trying to fix the old laptop.

Who manufactured your hard drive?  Online Drive Fitness Tests which just take a few minutes are available for some drives.

Log onto the Hitachi web-site ( www.hitachi.com) and do a search for their hard drive fitness test. When you find it download it to your hard drive, then run the program with a fresh floppy disk in the floppy drive.  When its done boot from the floppy and run the drive test.  It will tell you in a few minutes whether there are any problems with the drive.
