If you are using a Windows XP, there should be a PC Restore option, boot the computer, as soon as you see the DELL logo, hold down CTRL while tapping F11, launch PC Restore to restore your computer to the factory settings.

Angie9,

I'm not sure if you were also referring to defaulting the BIOS back to it's factory settings.  If so, just follow the steps below to default the BIOS options.

  • Reboot system and enter the BIOS Setup by pressing F2.
  • Turn on Caps Lock, Scroll Lock and  Num Lock.
  • Press ALT + E then ALT + F (should hear beep) then ALT + B

The closest to factory condition, you can revert the 4550 to, is a clean reinstall of XP.

First, disconnect all the peripherals from the system except the keyboard, mouse and monitor.

How to configure a Dell Dimension series system to boot to the CD or DVD drive.

How to reinstall, XP.

While installing, remember to delete all existing partitions when you are prompted, then recreate the partitions and format the hard drive, following by installing XP.
After installing XP, you need to install the drivers and applications in the following order,

Intel Chipset
Video
Network Interface Card [NIC]
Audio
Modem
All other drivers.

Then, install the Anti Virus utility and update the definitions, followed by all the critical Microsoft updates.

Bev.

Sorry to say, that the Dimension 4550, does not have the Dell PC Restore by Symantec feature, this was installed in Dimension systems, shipped after 7.16.04.
