Hi KT,

Here is the Dell firmware for your drive.
NEC 2100
Also make sure the drive is still running in DMA mode and not PIO mode; click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 15, articles 14 & 17.

Happy New Year !

since were on the subject of Dimension 4600 and burner problems I'll just post here.

I am unable to burn CD's for some reason. I have been able to before but for some reason it doesn't want to work now. I have made sure the device is enabled, I have used several different discs, used two different burning programs, and I have every update from Windows update available.

The programs i've used are windows media player and itunes and my OS is XP.

My burner is HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8483B

Could someone please help me troubleshoot this.

Hi KT,

I am assuming the Dell firmware did not help? Is the drive still under warranty?
Have you tried another burning program? Two of regulars have listed two free programs that seem to do a good job. Click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 7-5, article 16.

Best Regards!

Pretty much the same problem like I am having. But I am able to burn music CD's so I don't know what the problem is. Takes forever to get hold of Dell on the phone and I have prepaid so I am unable to call them. That is why if I am having tech problems and can get help here and other message boards i have looked at

Hi Nintendo,

Dell does not have a firmware update for drive. Is your drive under warranty?
Section 12, article 3 has Dell`s article for the diagnostic test on the drive. See if it will pass.

Hi KT,

Run the same test, also if the drive is out of warranty, there may be a hacked firmware available for the drive that converts it to NEC 2500.
Being straight forward to both of you, how much tim o you really want to spend on these drive. You can now pick up a DVD+/-RW for less than $35-$40 at New Egg

Best Regards
