Dimension 9100 (unmountable_boot_volume) error code

Have a blue screen comes up at start up telling me a error code *unmountable_boot error* from everything i have read so far looks like the hard drive has went out. F12 tells me the following code (SATA DISK s/n 5mt2p7re - confidence test = results error code ofoo:1344 MSG block 246788: uncorrectable data error or media is write protected.)

My PC is now one year old, and my warrity has just expired. Can anyone confirm that this hard drive indeed needs replaced? Is there anything else i can do except replace the hard drive? Thanks for any help you can give me with this.

Aside from replacing the hard drive, consider the fix posted at the following website:

There is a good chance this may resolve the issue (without losing stored data). Worse case scenario... Before reimaging or replacing the hard drive, run an extended hard drive test using Dell 32 bit diagnostics.

OK thanks for the suggestion, the only thing is i don't have a floppy drive to save the suggeted file to. Any other suggestions? Thanks again.

FROM THE WEB SITE:
Someone filled out the form to the right and asked about systems without a XP CD like Compaq and HP.  If you have a XP system and don't have a XP CD please download the Windows XP boot disk from our Downloads page and use it instead of the XP CD.
NOTE: *** The Win XP boot disk takes 6 floppy disks. ***EB SITE

If you have a Windows XP installation cd, you shouldn't need a floppy.... Just power on the system, press the F12 key to get the boot menu. Insert XP disk, then select "boot from CD". As soon as you see the message to "press any key", do so to initiate the Windows Setup.... at the next screen, choose to repair, and that will take you to a dos prompt.... Then type "chkdsk  /p" without the quotes and hit enter. When that is done type "fixboot" and hit enter "Y" and enter at the prompt. Then type "exit" and hit enter. The system should reboot into Windows without getting the error message.

If for some reason that doesn't work for you, repeat the procedure to boot to the recovery console. but type "chkdsk  /r" then enter, when done type "exit" and hit enter. This will take longer, but the system should boot back into Windows.

Should you not have a XP installation disk, and to backup data is critical, you may want to consider buying an external (USB) floppy drive, to download the boot disks messaged in the weblink. If data backup is not critical, and you don't have an XP installation CD, you're last option may be to press the Control and F11 keys on boot. Hopefully, you're restore partition is intact.
