Although the System Restore fixed your particular problem, that is not the answer to the problem all the time. Most of the time, if a drive is inaccessable, uninstalling it in the Windows Device Manager and then restarting Windows will fix it.
As far as the Direct CD updates, I don't know of anyone that has had a problem with the latest V5 Roxio updates and the updates have been out for quite a while. If you have the version that came with your Dell then you need the updates for the BASIC version (and you need all the updates, not just the Direct CD update).
I would suggest you download and install the full Basic update, again.

Damage and scratches on the top of the CD, can
result in the entire CD not being accessible any
more.
Typical error messages are;
* d:\ is not accessible (where d:\ is the CD
drive letter)
* Incorrect function.

CAUSE
