Disabling Sonic DLA

This is actually concerning an Inspiron, but I believe the desktops are using the same software.

The only answer I got on the Inspiron board ( thead here) was to disable DLA from msconfig, but there must be a better way than using a troubleshooting tool (msconfig) to permanently disable an app.

"New I8600. We were having problems getting the CD-RW/DVD drive to open. It would open after a fresh boot, but not after using the machine for a while.

Found that the Sonic DLA was apparently latching on to the drive and not releasing it. We got around the problem by disabling DLA via right clicking the drive, Properties, DLA tab, disable. Now the drive eject is behaving properly. Not sure exactly what we lose by disabling DLA, but it doesn't seem like anything we will miss.

First, is there a proper 'fix' for this problem - to allow DLA to remain enabled and not lock the drive?

If not... Although I have DLA disabled for the drive, I see it is still running in the background. I have found no way though Sonic configuration to totally disable this 'feature'. Is there any way - short of editing the registry - to stop DLA from running? "

Hi Derf,
I do not have the software but I picked this up during a slow night surfn`

Disable Sonic DLA.
1) Click the "Start" button
2) Double Click on the 'My Computer" icon
3) In the "My Computer" window, right click on the CD device then choose "Properties"
4) On the "CD Drive Properties" screen, click on the DLA tab, then remove the checkmark from "Enable DLA on your drives"
5) Click the OK button, then restart computer

I have recommmended it a couple of times in e-mails and such, feedback stated it worked so I added it to the CD/RW page.

Let me know.

Take care

God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do and the eyesight to tell the
difference.

Hi Derf,

Not having the software makes it difficult to play with and there seems to be limited information on the net as well. You know you`re one of my best buddies but I`m sort of going to stay with Nero and not run out and buy Sonic... :) !!

Seriously though, this link says the file is required:

This link says their software can stop it from running in the background.

I too simply do not like using msconfig for a "fix" that should be available if the program is written properly.
Searching for the file, tends to give hits for HJT lists.

I wonder, if the WinTask program can fix it, might there be an option in TweakUI?

Best Regards,
Jeff

Thanks Predator,

The CD-RW/DVD drive wouldn't eject except just after a fresh reboot. I believe it was either a post by you that I found or your webpages that led me to disabling DLA as a fix in the manner you stated above. With DLA disabled for that drive, the eject now seems to work as it should.

But that only turns if off for the drive. Looking at the running processes on the laptop (I don't have it available at the moment for any details) it appears that DLA is still loading and running at startup. In particular, the file ....\dla\tfswctrl.exe is running.

I find no way to make any configuration adjustment on DLA. It annoys me that there is no way to configure DLA so that it doesn't run from startup.

I don't really want to uninstall it (I really didn't even check to see if it was listed seperately from Sonic RecordNow in the add/remove list) as I may want to use it some day. I'm philosophically opposed to using the troubleshooting tool msconfig as a way to permanently disable an app. And I shouldn't have to resort to regedit just to get an application under control.

But then, I'm probably searching for a solution that doesn't exist...

Or better yet, is there a way to get this app to work without screwing up the ability to eject a disk from the drive?

Hmm, after reading that one, perhaps I better leave it alone. Thanks for the research Jeff.
