try deleting all the temporary files manually, this is one of the most simple ways to work around

Find cleanmgr.exe (Windows directory)>see if the program will run if opened directly

I do not have cleanmgr.exe in any of my files.  Any suggestions on how to install it.  I'm using WindowsXP.

Thanks,

Max

Run repair/install from your XP CD startup options OR run sfc to extract cleanmgr from your XP CD to XP's System folder.

DISK CLEANUP SOLUTION

Solution to Compress old Files

1.Type Regedit in Start - Run
2.Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Volume Caches
3. Open "Compress Old Files" folder
4. Delete all files in this folder
5. Reboot
6. Run Disk Cleanup

NOW MY DISK CLEAN UP WORKS FINE FOR MONTHS NOW. FOUND THIS ONLINE. http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win2000/r1024939934

Neither site you posted would download for me.  I am on dial-up, does that matter.  Also which CD is the setup options.  I had cleanup disk installed and the first week it worked fine but has disappeared.

Do I need the CD Dell tools for reinstalling Dell-Installed Software.  Sorry for so many questions, I am new at this.

Thanks

Max

Hi I thought you said your disk cleanup wasnt working any more but it use to? There is a problem in windows xp when you try to run disk cleanup after a while. It will stop like on 3 %. If thats the problem your having the fix is listed in my first post if not ok.

That is exactly my problem but when I went into redegit then I could only go to HK-Local_machines.  Then I went to software under that category, then to MS but there was no file listed for current version and I could not locate the file you gave me.

Thanks

YOU SHOULD HAVE IT

Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Volume Caches

U SAID YOU WENT TO LOOK FOR CURENT VERSION AFTER MICROSOFT. AFTER MICROSOFT FOLDER THEN YOU GO TO WINDOWS LIKE ABOVE.

Is Disk Cleanup accessible from Start>Run>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Cleanup>R click>Properties>Find Target? The links in my earlier post included only instructions on using sfc and cleanmgr tools.

HOW TO USE THE DELL RECOVERY CD

Dell support is also another option for your new computer.

Would it be better for me just to go back to system restore from the date of purchase.  Would this correct the disk cleanup?

Thanks,

Max

All personal settings and files eg. email, installed software eg. Dell modem and hardware will be lost unless backed up before Win XP system restore. Reinstalling all these components can take much more time than troubleshooting cleanmgr alone with no guarantee reinstalled components will "work".

In the meantime try these disk utilities which can a do a better job than cleanmgr; I've tried G-Lock Temp

DISK CLEAN UP UTILITIES

BTW: "Is Disk Cleanup accessible from Start>Run>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Cleanup>R click>Properties>Find Target?" If the target can be found other shortcuts may be broken. How are you trying to start Disk Cleanup? If target can't be found or there is no shortcut in quoted entry, has the Windows/System32 OR System folder been searched for cleanmgr?
