Disk Read Error

Question

This error popped out of nowhere. I ran Dell diagnostics, and it found no problems with the HD. I thought maybe it was bad ram sticks but that isn't the problem either. I can't do a repair or chkdsk /r with the Windows OS CD because it just gets stuck on a black screen with the message 'scanning hardware configuration'. I reset my bios settings and still nothing. All the lights on the LED on the back of the computer are green. Did my hard drive fail or is it something else? Message Edited by exhilator on 11-14-200602:54 PM

Which diagnostic did you run - the quick 10-minute, or the extended one (takes at least a couple of hours)?

I did the hardrive symptom tree tests.

Run the extensive (surface scan) test on the drive.
