DVD Drive

Despite having a DVD-RW in the D drive, I get a message to put a disc in the drive.  It appears to not recognize the disc.  I have done this with 2 or 3 DVDs, and the same thing happens with each one.  This is a new batch of DVD-RWs that I bought at Office Depot.

Hi Bzide,

I must ask, does the DVD/RW support writing to DVD-RW media.

Happy Holidays!

God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do and the eyesight to tell the
difference.

Hi Jeff:

I assume it does, but how would I know for sure.  Happy Holidays to you too!

Hi Bzide,
If you could list the model of your drive, we will look up the specs and go from there.

Seasons Greetings!

Hi Jeff:

I am not sure if this is what you are looking for, but my paperwork says that is a 16X DVD Rom.  The discs I bought show 4X DVD-RW.  Could this be the problem?

Hi Bzide,

Well my friend, usually if it states 16X DVD-ROM, then it is not a writer but simply a standard read only drive.
My wife and I are leaving shortly for a two day get-a-way before the Holidays, however if you could go to Device Manager and click the "+" sign next to CD/DVD devices, this should list the model name of your drive. Post it here and I am sure Mike, John, Jim, Bob or one of the other Regulars could verify the model of the drive for you.

Best wishes for Holidays!

Jeff:

I found the model number.  It is HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR 8163B.

The HLDS GDR-8163B is a DVD-ROM and that means it is
unable to write to blank media.  You will need a DVD
burner to write to DVD media.
