I have the same problem on my 5 year old Dimension 4550 desktop with Windows XP - the Eject button stopped working reliably about a month ago.  It would work again only after a reboot.

I followed some bad advice and replaced the DVD-RW drive with a new one, but the new one has the same problem.

Since then I found that I could eject a disc by using an Eject command from Nero or Roxio software when the physical eject button and the Eject command in the Windows Explorer right-click dropdown menu failed to work.  The path to the Eject button in Nero is Data/ Format rewritable CD.  (Be sure to install InCD to have this command available.)  Roxio is similar.

Obviously the system software got messed up, but I have no clue how to fix it.  If you figure it out, please let me know.

Hi, Donjo:

I have a 4550. Maybe I can suggest a couple ideas. First, I want you to try booting to safe mode and tell me if you have the same problem. Second, try booting to the BIOS (F2) and see if the drive is properly recognized. If you see "unknown", that may indicate a problem.
