DVD freezes when DVD is inserted

I have a Dell Dimention XPS500, my CD-ROM drive works fine with audio cd's and data cd's however whenever I insert a DVD into the drive my computer freezes and I can't even get the DVD out of my computer unless I resart my computer from the restart button on my tower. I have tried launching the DVD player before I insert the DVD but it still happens, what else can I do?

You should try the Troubleshooting Steps listed in this post, as this information should help correct your problem.

I have tried everything on the troubleshooting list that you sent me and still no dvd recognition. The same thing keeps happening, i insert a dvd and my computer freezes. One time i hit control + Alt + Delete, and it after a while it said that the dvd player is not responding. I am at a loss here is there anything else i can do? My dvd-cdrom drive is a Samsung DVD-ROM SD-608. I have noticed that a lot of other people have problems with the Samsung dvd drives is it them that are teh problem?

As the drive exhibits the same problems with all background programs closed, you may need to contact Dell technical support and, after performing any necessary diagnostics, request a replacement drive, if within warranty.
