DVD-R & DVD+R

I have an XPS, and I was wondering if the NEC DVD burner (ND-5100A) only burns DVD+R formats. It does not reconize DVD-R media. Is there any firmware update to allow the drive to burn both formats?

MonkeyManx,

Thank you for using Dell's Community Forum.

Unfortunately, to my knowledge, there is not an update that allows this.

Is there a way I can go through Dell to upgrade my DVD drive to an 8x dual format?
If so:
Will I have to buy the new drive or will I only have to pay for part of it if Dell keeps my current drive.
Do I have to send my laptop back to Dell, or will they just send me the new drive, I install it and sent them the old one?

You will have to pay the full price - dell will not reimburse you. You can buy it from spare parts.

Hello,

There is an unofficial firmware available that will add DVD-R/RW read/write capability to the ND-5100A.  After the update, your ND-5100A will essentially become a ND-5500A.  You just need to google for the firmware.

The firmware update is unofficial and not supported by NEC, so that may be why the moderator missed it.

Firmware updating is a fairly simple process, but you do it at your own risk.  If you don't feel comfortable with firmware updating or just don't want to take the risk, the safer route would be to get a better drive from Dell or eBay.

The NEC 5100A does not Write to DVD-R/RW discs. It's not configured for that and cannot be altered. (Information from Nec.co.uk)

Your wrong. I updated my firmware, and now im able to write to DVD-R. The reason is; The difference between the NEC 5100 and NEC 5500 is that the 5500 has a different firmware that allows it to write -R. By flashing the 5100 firmware and writing in new firmware my 5100 now writes and is reconized as a 5500.

Did you see the reply re/ updating the ND5100A with firmware. It looks as if I was wrong and so are the manufacturers. Have a look on Google.  Regards dmsw12336@blueyonder.co.uk

Hi there,

Well thanks very much for that advice, I stand humbly corrected, but who do you believe when even the makers lie to you! I see also that you can get a firmware update from Google to achieve this. I'll keep that in mind regarding the ND-6500 device I am about to obtain for my Inspiron 5150 Thanks again,  D.M.

Updating the firmware is not recomended by nec and voids the warranty
