DVD -R / +R problem

I hope this hasn't already been brought up a zillion times before, but I couldn't find it in the forums.

I have a Dimension 8400 with a ND-3530A and everything worked properly until the day I bought a spindle of DVD+R (TDK Brand). I used DVD-R (TDK Brand) blanks before and never had a problem. I noticed on the packaging a notice that said I may have to update my firmware to use the DVD+R. I tried without updating, and it didn't work so I came to the Dell website, found the update and applied it.

The DVD writer worked after applying the update, and I was a happy camper. Then I ran out of the DVD+R blanks in my spindle and went to buy a new spindle. The spindle on sale was DVD-R (TDK Brand) so I purchased it but now I can't seem to be able to write to DVD-R blanks.

I couldn't find an older firmware update on the Dell website to apply hoping to "reset" my DVD writer to it's original condition.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanx!

Thanks for the quick response!

I did check to make sure the drivers and program were all updated, and I did consider doing what you suggested through your links, but I was a little hesitent to do it ... I guess I'll try it now :)

And the update I did apply was the 104c.  I didn't see the 103 update you mentioned ... would you be kind enough to post a link to it.  Thanx!

Hi Irkengir,

You do indeed have an unusual issue my friend.
Lets see if this time it might just be a driver issue. please click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 15, article 1; Section 20, article 3.
See if either one of these will help.
If not, check for a possible update to the burning software you are using.
As for firmware, Dell released, two 103C and 104C; if you applied 103C, then try going to 104C.

Best Regards

Hi Irkengir,

Here is the Dell firmware:
103C
you may get a warning telling you this is an older release, whether it will help, I cannot honestly say.

Best Regards

Thanks for the suggestions, but none of  them did the trick.  I guess the original version of the firmware was older than 103c  :(  I'm just going to have to go buy some DVD+R ... oh well.  Thanks again for the suggestions.

Hi Irkengir,

Dell does not have the original firmware that ships with the drive available, sorry.
Still, a very odd issue, hate to recommend things that may simply waste your time or make matters worse but I will throw them out there for your review.
To cover software, have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling your burning software, check for possible updates? Cleared the Upper & Lower Filters?
Cleared the NVRAM?
The latter two, same CD/RW link, Section 100, article 31; Section 11, article 2.

Best Regards

Hi Julie,

Are the drive showing up in Device Manager with any error codes?
If you are seeing Code 19, 31, 39, 37, 41 then the issue may be related to the Upper & Lower Filters.
If the above is true, then click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 100, article 31 (Ignore the reference to Roxio).
Otherwise lets try the following, again in Device Manager, select one drive click Uninstall, select the second drive and click Uninstall, shut the system down. Open the case and reseat (unplug/replug) the IDE cable going from the motherboard to the back of each drive. Turn the system back on, did this help?
If not, same CD/RW link, Section 20, article 3, this reloads the IDE controller.

Best Regards
