dvd rom drive problem
i need to start by saying i dont know much about computers, but i do have faith in messageboard help.
i have a dimension 4600 that is about one year old now and am having problems with my dvd rom drive. i tried to play a dvd but there was no automative pop up beginning or the dvd and when i tried to manually get the dvd to play nothing happened and i got the messge "please insert disc into drive."
i have also had the same problem trying to make an exact copy of an audio cd. i would place a cd into the dvd rom drive and a blank cd into my cdrw drive and would get the message saying there is not a disc in my dvdrom drive. =( i dunno what to do.
according to my packing slip i have a 16x dvd-rom drive and a 48x max cd-rw drive. essentially the bottom one is working fine, but the top one isnt. however when i check the "properties" of my dvd drive, it says that everything is working properly. so im confused. help!

Hi Nikko,
Calling support is always a good idea, this is what you paid the warranty for.
Lets start with some standard steps: which you will most likely have to run for the tech; click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 15, article 1; Section 20, article 3; Section 11, article 2.
Section 12, articles 2 & 3 and Section 15, article 16.
For the auotplay on the DVD, Section 6-5, 11.
Consider uninstalling / reinstalling the DVD software, also your burning software as well.
Finally, Dell has released some firmware updates for a few of their drives to address issues. Hover your mouse over the Product Support Tab above, click on Downloads, enter information for your system, then scroll to Removable Storage Media Devices, see if your drives are listed. Also Dell did release BIOS updates to help with some Detection issues as well.
Best Regards
God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do and the eyesight to tell the
difference.
